Addiction. Motherhood. Escape.
Spanning four years and four countries, I Drank From the Nile is a raw and psychologically gripping memoir of addiction, motherhood, and the unrelenting will to survive.
Katya Dunko grew up in chaos, learning to silence her wounds.
Home, for her, was never a safe place; it was something that didn’t exist on any map.
Pills dulled the ache.
Survival became her mask.
Determined to prove she was worthy, Katya followed love to Egypt, believing it would be her redemption.
Instead, it became the place that forced her to face the truth.
An unforgettable story of resilience, carved from pain, defined by endurance, and bound by one unbreakable truth: the cycle ends with her.

"It’s a beautiful book; I couldn’t put it down. From start to finish, you pull the reader in and keep us turning the page. You take the reader on a gripping, emotional journey and it is so worth it. I can’t wait to see this turned into a movie!" --- Tamarind Hill Press
About Katya
My journey as a writer began long before I escaped Egypt and my marriage with my daughter, long before I allowed myself to be a victim of my chaotic childhood, and before I numbed the unresolved pain with pills. It began with a simple "one day," I said as a little girl, watching the stars in the countryside of Ukraine, "I will write a book." I didn’t know then what it would be about, but the memoir I eventually wrote found me. It’s a tale of strength, forgiveness, and a journey of resilience—a testament to becoming the mother I never had, and realizing that it was all worth it in the end.
As a martyr turned mother, my goal has always been to inspire, to reveal the fortune hidden within hardships, and to show how one can harness and transform their struggles, breaking the generational curse that haunts us all: the cycle of pain.
